Bio: Karen Sama, Program Coordinator
Karen Sama grew up in Queens, New York, and earned her BA in Religion from Colorado College. After graduating, she moved to Denver and worked directly with preschoolers with special needs in homes and Head Start classrooms. She had the opportunity to learn from and work collaboratively with many teachers, parents, occupational therapists, social workers, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, licensed professional counselors, school psychologists, special educators, and administrators. After repeating preschool 8 times, Karen realized that she a) prints her letters because she holds her pencil too tightly to write in cursive b) chews on pencils and runs up and down stairs to help her focus c) learned a heck of a lot more vocabulary than she ever imagined to catch up to her Spanish-speaking preschoolers (how DO you say “walrus?”). She enjoys jokes (especially puns), talking to strangers, and reading while walking.
