On November 3rd, 91 Boston high school students and 88 volunteer tutors paired up for 826 Boston's third annual College Essay Boot Camp. Students received focused one-on-one support from volunteer tutors like Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe journalist Walter Robinson. "College essays are the life stories of 17-year-olds who have already surmounted extraordinary obstacles that few among us confront in an entire lifetime," stated Robinson, who is now Distinguished Professsor of Journalism at Northeastern University.
Thirty-two percent of the students who attended the event will be the first in their family to attend college and over 60% are first generation Americans. "To be honest, I came here with no ideas, no topic, nothing," stated one student in attendance. "I am so grateful to be a participant in this program. I overcame a lot."
