826 Boston had a full house at our tutoring center in Egleston Square on a very rainy and windy Thursday night on November 21, 2024 for a fundraiser for 826 Boston sponsored by Fenway Health. We screened Annie Weatherwax’s short film Monster in a Dress, followed by a lively discussion with Annie, Paloma and Dani from 826 Boston, and more than fifty attendees.
Monster in a Dress is a semi-autobiographical story about Annie’s struggle growing up as a girl who didn’t act like one. It reimagines the relationship she had with her immigrant family and pays homage to her grandmother, a powerful matriarch who saved her. A multimedia short story, Monster in a Dress was created with drawings, sound effects, kinetic typography, animation, archival imagery, and live action clips. The elements have been orchestrated not only to entertain, but also to build empathy. For that reason, Annie narrates the story herself.
Annie spent her early career as an artist sculpting superheroes and cartoon characters. Included in her portfolio are characters from Nickelodeon, DC Comics, and Pixar. Her debut novel, All We Had, was a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award and is a major motion picture from Tribeca films directed by and starring Katie Holmes. In 2017 she received The Hamilton Life Achievement Award for individuals with dyslexia.
Weatherwax also recently joined the 826 Boston Literary Board.
