826 Boston opens first dual language Writers’ Room

November 26, 2024

We’re thrilled to announce that 826 Boston has opened its first dual language Writers’ Room at Margarita Muñiz Academy! We celebrated this momentous milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, November 20.

Although the Writers’ Room opened its doors to students this school year, 826 Boston has partnered with the school since its inception a decade ago. The 826 Boston team has supported every graduating class and has helped publish five student-authored publications, including Attendance Would Be 100%, I Closed My Eyes and Imagined, Distintas Identidades, Distintas Historias, La Voz de Mis Memorias, and Tales From the Darkness.

During the ceremony, student speakers shared their own written pieces, created with guidance from the Writers’ Room team. Spanish Humanities teacher Marilu Alvarado-Hernandez and Headmaster Dr. Dania Vazquez also shared remarks during the event.

The creation of this dual language Writers’ Room was made possible through generous multi-year funding from the Clowes Fund, Liberty Mutual Foundation, and the Campbell & Hall Charity Fund. Additionally, the room’s setup received support from the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation.

As Jay Enciso, 826 Boston’s In-School Program Director, said during the ceremony:

“Today is not just a celebration, but a promise from us to our students: In this space, we will value the power of words in shaping our world. We will help students understand that writing is not just about putting words on a page. Se trata de encontrar tu voz y compartirla con el mundo—ya sea en inglés, en español o en ambos idiomas. (It’s about finding your voice and sharing it with the world—whether in English, Spanish, or both.)”
