🌟 Volunteers of the Year 🌟 #826Boston is lucky to have so many amazing volunteers, and today we’re excited to recognize two of our Volunteers of the Year—Rebecca Knight and Tom Gagen! ✨Both volunteers have supported students through multiple semesters, making strong connections with 826 Boston students and staff. This year our Volunteers of the Year will be awarded two tickets each to attend our Night of 1,000 Stories Gala coming up on Thursday, October 23!
Who are our Volunteers of the Year?
Rebecca Knight is a Boston-based journalist whose essays and reported stories have appeared in Harvard Business Review, The Boston Globe, Business Insider, and The Christian Science Monitor, among others. Earlier in her career, she spent a decade as an editor and reporter at the Financial Times in New York and London. Originally from Maine, she lives in the South End with her husband and two daughters. Rebecca has been tutoring with 826 Boston for two years.
Tom Gagen came to 826 Boston after teaching at a Boston high school for three years. Before working at the high school, he worked at The Boston Globe for 36 years. He likes that tutoring allows him to use the skills that he acquired in both careers. Tom has been tutoring with 826 Boston for six years.
We asked, “What are your favorite memories with 826 Boston?”
Rebecca: “I’ve volunteered in the Writer’s Room at the O’Bryant High School for Math and Science for the past two years and I’ve gotten a ridiculous amount of joy and meaning out of the experience. My favorite moments are when I see something click in my students and they find a sharper way to say what they mean or make a connection they hadn’t seen before.”
Tom: “One of my favorite memories is of helping a student with his college essay to explain a time when he had a profound impact on his family’s future. It’s exhilarating to walk into a school and feel the energy of the students. It’s gratifying to help them with their writing.”
