Last week, friends, family, teachers, and members of the 826 Boston community came together to celebrate the Blanca Burgos Bilingual Writers’ Room at the Rafael Hernández School.

The evening paid tribute to the memory of Hernández School teacher Blanca Burgos, for whom the program is named. Blanca had a deep love of writing, literature, bilingual education, and most of all, the Hernández School. She had always wanted a space where students could write, create, express, and read in both Spanish and English.
“What an honor to have a space dedicated to writing and dedicated to one of our beloved teachers at our school,” said Elementary School Superintendent Ana Tavares. “Sometimes dreams do come true, and here we are.”

Over the course of the school year, 826 Boston will serve every student in the building through drop-in writing assistance, whole-class visits led by classroom teachers, and extracurricular activities that offer creative writing opportunities.
