Hot off the Press! Fall Event Raises $150,000 for 826 Boston

November 16, 2016

Extra, extra, read all about it! Our annual Books for Breakfast fundraiser featured old-school paperboys, roosters, and stacks on stacks of… pancakes. Boston Globe Editor and author, Brian McGrory, headlined the event and spoke about his personal writing journey.

Grove Hall After-School students Jhordan and Dhorien opened the show with breaking news about the Flipflam Man, a character of their own creation. Cassania Gilson, author of “Wooden Shoes” in I Want You to Have This, shared how her experience writing a short memoir turned into the college application that led to her admission at Fitchburg State, where she is now a junior.

Jess Drench, Executive Director, celebrated the success of our College Essay Boot Camps, which we took on the road, serving more students than ever. You can watch the Matt Watson film, Writing our Next Chapter, created for the event here. The stories of the students at Boston International Newcomers Academy was a powerful and emotional tribute to the stories that 826 Boston is privileged to hear from its students.

And this all took place under an hour! Thanks to our sponsors, the talented and dedicated event committee, and everyone who attended, we were able to raise $150,000 for our free youth writing programs.
