Dear Future Me: The origins of this year’s fundraiser

December 19, 2024

When we started thinking about this year’s Annual Appeal campaign, we were drawn to a writing prompt that many 826 Boston students responded to this year: “Dear Future Me.” My team and I reviewed dozens of pieces of writing, and we found so much hope, pride, and inspiration that we knew we had the makings of a great campaign to inspire others and support the future of 826 Boston.

Here are just a few of the quotes we chose from:

Dear Future Me: I see growth when I am put to the test, when my peers lean on me for help, and when I prioritize myself.”
—Ciara

Dear Future Me: The question that once confined me—‘Who will you be?’—evolved to something liberating: ‘Who can I become? and ‘Who am I right now?’”
—Uzoamaka

Dear Future Me: The future is ever approaching and shaped by the past and present, giving it near limitless potential for change.”
—Letter from the Student Editorial Board, Rubix, issue 12

This inspiring writing from students confirms why providing the time and space for students to write is so important. Each school where we have a Writers’ Room provides that necessary space—and welcomes students in to find their future selves, too.

Each 826 Boston Writers’ Room delivers long-term, meaningful change in the lives of students during and after the school day with individualized attention that improves writing skills and fosters creative self-expression.

With a focus on publishing, improving writing skills, and project-based learning, the Writers’ Room uses trained volunteer tutors and full-time dedicated staff to unlock students’ full potential.

This year our focus is on opening our newest Writers’ Room—at New Mission High School in Hyde Park. Over the course of a school year, the Writers’ Room will serve nearly every student in the school through whole-class visits, individual writing assistance, and/or after-school extracurricular activities.

I’m asking you to give to 826 Boston today to raise funds to open a new Writers’ Room this winter. Your gift will allow us to continue to reach Boston students as they share their important stories with the world.

Thank you—as always—for your support. We’re truly grateful that you’re a part of this community.

With gratitude,

Corey Yarbrough
Executive Director
